Full-Grain Leather vs. Genuine Leather
What is the difference between full grain leather and genuine leather? Did you know that there are 4 grades of leather? Well you can rest assured that Thorum Wallets are made from only the highest quality, top-tier leather category which is full-grain leather.
The Martin is Thorum’s newest addition, all thanks to our owner and CEO Caleb. He went through a wallet purchasing spree, only to find out that everything on the market was either too bulky, super dated, or just downright ugly. As usual, his solution was to just make his own! Like everything else he does, he only sources the finest materials for Thorum products so The Martin, naturally, needed to be made from full-grain leather.
But what is full-grain leather? Full-grain leather is the highest quality leather you can purchase on the market. Compared to the lesser tiers of leather (Top Grain, Genuine, and Bonded Leather), full-grain leather is slightly more expensive, but exponentially higher quality and longer lasting while still being super affordable.
So why did we choose full-grain leather for the Thorum men’s wallet? Because Caleb doesn't skimp on quality. Anything he does, whether it’s rings, watches, or wallets alike, he does BIG. No, not literally. But if he’s going to put out a product, he wants to ensure that we can stand behind it proudly and back the products he designs and creates. Full-grain leather just made sense for the Thorum wallet.
So you’ve read this far and you’re probably wondering, “ok, but what is the difference between full-grain leather and genuine leather?” Well I'll answer your question here. Full-grain leather is made from the top layer of the animal hyde. It retains its natural grain pattern, is not sanded or altered in any way. Genuine leather is made from the lower layers of the hyde, and is frequently sanded or embossed to improve its aesthetic. It’s less breathable than full-grain leather, and also far less durable.
